Joan Altisent
(Barcelona, 1891- 1971)

He studied at the Conservatori Municipal de Música and Conservatori del Liceu de Barcelona. He developed a musical activity that ranged from pedagogy to choral conducting and composition. He was an organ performer and conducted the Orfeó Barcelonès for many years. As a composer he cultivated a great diversity of genres: concertos for various instruments, songs, sardanas, operas, a ballet and choral work. He was president of the Board of the Conservator del Liceu and in 1955 he created the Joan Altisent Prize. In 1958 he was appointed academician of the "Real Academia de Bellas Artes de la Purísima Concepción" of Valladolid. The Barcelona City Council dedicated to him the Joan Altisent Gardens in 1981. His works include his opera "Amunt", premiered at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in 1958, the ballet "Gavines", the "Poema de la Resurecció" (1960) and the songs for voice and orchestra popularized by the baritone Manuel Ausensi.

Joan Altisent's music is ascribed to traditional aesthetics and stylistics often based on popular song and with influences from Renaissance music.
